How to use evaluation templates by rank

Score different belt tests with different evaluation items by creating templates and assigning them to belt tests.

Written by Ben Ryoo

Evaluation templates let you score different belt tests with different evaluation items. For example, beginner belts can be scored on basics, while black belt candidates are scored on forms, sparring, and breaking.

Every school starts with a Default Template. Any belt test you don't assign to another template keeps using it, so if you never create a template, nothing changes.

Create a template

  1. Open a testing and go to its scoring screen (Testing Evaluation System).

  2. Click the ⚙ icon in the top right to open Evaluation Settings, then the Evaluation Items tab.

  3. Click + Template.

  4. Enter a name, for example "Beginner." Choose whether to start from a copy of an existing template or from scratch.

  5. Choose the belt tests that should use this template, for example "Default Rank · YELLOW → ORANGE." If a belt test already uses another template, it's marked as moving, and you're asked to confirm.

  6. Save, then click the new template's card to add or edit its evaluation items.

Good to know

  • Each belt test uses one template. A template can cover as many belt tests as you like.

  • Template names must be unique. Names that differ only by capital letters count as the same name.

  • The last rank in a rank system has no belt test, so it doesn't appear in the list.

Score a testing with templates

On the scoring screen, students are grouped by the template their belt test uses, with a count of how many in each group are scored. The template you're scoring with is shown at the top.

  1. Click a student in a group. Only that group's students can be selected together.

  2. Score them using that template's evaluation items.

  3. Click a student in another group to switch templates.

If every student in a testing uses the same template, the screen looks the same as before, with no groups.

Edit or delete a template

In Evaluation Settings › Evaluation Items, each template is a card that shows which belt tests it's used for and how many sections it has.

  • Edit items: Click the card.

  • Rename it or change its belt tests: Click ⋮ › Edit name & belt tests. A template that isn't assigned to any belt test is marked in orange.

  • Delete it: Click ⋮ › Delete. Its belt tests go back to the Default Template, and the confirmation shows how many tests are affected.

The Default Template can't be renamed or deleted, but you can edit its items.

FAQ

What happens to evaluations I've already scored if I change a template? They stay as they were. Scored evaluations keep the template they were scored with.

Can two testings for the same belt use different templates? No. Templates are assigned per belt test, so every testing for that belt uses the same template.

I moved a belt to a new template while scoring. What happens? Students in that belt move to the new template's group. Score them there.
