Revenue types let you sort the money your school takes in by category, so you can see where it comes from. For example, you can compare how much comes from memberships, belt testing fees and equipment sales.
NextKick includes a set of default revenue types, and you can add your own for anything else your school sells.
Where to find revenue types
Go to Settings → School Setup and open the Revenue type tab.
Default revenue types
Every school starts with five default revenue types. They can't be edited or deleted. Most of them are assigned automatically, so you don't need to choose them yourself.
Revenue type | Used for |
Membership | Membership payments (assigned automatically) |
Testing | Belt testing and promotion fees (assigned automatically) |
Events | Event registrations and tickets (assigned automatically) |
eStore | eStore purchases (assigned automatically) |
Other | Anything that doesn't fit another category |
Add a custom revenue type
Go to Settings → School Setup → Revenue type
Click Add
Enter a name for the new revenue type and save it
Custom revenue types are useful for income you want to track on its own, for example:
Equipment and sparring gear
Uniforms
Birthday parties
Private lessons
Summer camp
Choosing a revenue type for a payment
When you add a payment or create an invoice, choose the revenue type that matches the income. For example, choose "Birthday parties" when you invoice a party booking.
Viewing income by revenue type
You can see the revenue type for each payment in:
Payments → Transactions
Payments → Invoices
Edit, delete or reorder custom revenue types
Rename: click the pencil icon next to the revenue type
Delete: click the trash icon next to the revenue type
Reorder: drag the ⠿ handle on the left to move a revenue type up or down
Only custom revenue types can be renamed or deleted. The five default types always stay.
Note: Renaming or deleting a revenue type doesn't change past payments. Payments that were already recorded keep the old name.
Tips
Set up your revenue types early. If you create them before you start recording payments, your records will be organized from day one.
Choose names carefully. Past payments keep the old name if you rename a revenue type, so renaming one partway through the year splits the same kind of income across two names.
Keep names consistent. For example, use "Equipment" rather than both "Equipment" and "Gear," so the same kind of income doesn't end up in two categories.
Common questions
Do I need to choose a revenue type for membership payments?
No. Payments for memberships, testing, events and eStore purchases are assigned to their revenue type automatically.
Where do I choose a revenue type?
When you add a payment or create an invoice.
Can I rename or delete the default revenue types?
No. Membership, Testing, Events, eStore and Other can't be edited or deleted. Only custom revenue types can.
What happens to past payments if I rename or delete a custom revenue type?
Nothing. Past payments keep the old name. The change only applies to payments recorded after it.
