You can promote a single student from their profile, for example after a make-up test or when a student transfers in with a belt. This guide shows how, and what changes after the promotion.
Before you start
Your rank system needs to be set up with its belts. See How to Set Up a Rank System.
To include a certificate, create a certificate template first. See How to Create and Print Belt Certificates.
To give a student a different program's rank system, see How to Change a Student's Rank System instead.
Step 1: Choose the right way to promote
Situation | Where to promote |
One student | The student's Ranks tab (this guide) |
A group of students at once | Attendance → Bulk Actions. See Bulk Actions. |
Students who passed a belt test | The test itself. See How to Run a Belt Test. |
Step 2: Open the student's Ranks tab
Go to Accounts → Profiles and open the student.
Click the Ranks tab.
The tab lists every promotion with its Date of Test, Rank System, Current Rank and Promoted Date. Use the buttons above the list to show one rank system at a time.
Step 3: Change the belt
Click Change Rank. The window lists the student's rank systems and current belts.
Click ⋮ next to the rank system, then Edit.
In Rank, choose the new belt.
Check Promoted Date and Date of Test. Both are required and start as today's date. Neither can be in the future.
Optional: choose a Certificate Type to create a certificate for this promotion.
Click Save.
Tip: To record a promotion that happened earlier, change the two dates to that day.
After you save, Attendances, Days at Rank and Rank Progress start over for the new belt.
Good to know: Add in the Change Rank window gives the student another rank system. Don't use it to promote within the same system.
Step 4: Check classes after the promotion
A new belt can change which classes the student belongs in.
From the next day, the student is removed from recurring classes that don't allow their new rank. This applies to sessions that haven't been paid for.
To add them to classes that match their new rank automatically, turn on Settings → Schedule → Rank Change → Auto-Add to Matching Classes. It's off by default.
If your rank systems are linked, a student promoted from the last belt of one system moves to the first belt of the next. See How to Link Rank Systems.
FAQ
I chose the wrong belt. How do I undo it?
On the Ranks tab, click the trash icon on that promotion. NextKick moves the student back to their earlier rank when it can.
Does the student get a certificate?
Only if you choose a Certificate Type when you save the new belt. See How to Create and Print Belt Certificates.
Is the family told about the new belt?
Only if you set up a workflow or automation for rank changes. See How to Build a Workflow. The family sees the new belt in the student app, and the certificate if you created one.
What does the pencil next to Rank System & Rank do?
It opens Tip management, where you add or remove tips. It doesn't change the belt. It only shows when tips are turned on in your rank setup. See What Is the Tip System in Rank Setup?.
