A family membership covers several family members with one combined charge. When a sibling joins or leaves partway through, you change who shares the membership and update the price yourself. To set up a family membership from scratch, see How to Set Up a Family Membership.
Before you start
The sibling needs a profile linked to the family. On the profile of the student who holds the membership, click the pencil icon next to Family Members, then Actions → Add new member or Select from members.
Family members share one email address and one app login. See How to Manage a Member's Profile and Family.
Work from the profile of the student the membership was added to. Manage family sharing only appears on that student's membership.
Step 1: Add the sibling to the membership
Open the Membership tab and click the family membership to expand it.
Click Actions → Manage family sharing.
Check the sibling and click Save.
Step 2: Update the price
The amount doesn't change on its own when someone is added.
On the same membership, click Actions → Edit billing schedule.
Enter the new combined price in Autopay Amount($).
Add a Memo, such as "Added Ethan," and click Save changes.
The new price applies from the next charge. Also update the Auto payment amount in Actions → Auto-renewal settings, or the next term renews at the old price.
Step 3: Charge for the rest of this billing period (optional)
NextKick doesn't prorate the change for you. If the sibling starts partway through a billing period, work out the amount and process the payment manually from the student's Invoices tab. See How to Make a One-Time Payment in NextKick.
Example: The family price goes from $150 to $250 a month, and the sibling joins with 15 of 30 days left. Charge ($250 − $150) × 15 ÷ 30 = $50 now.
Remove a sibling
On the family membership, click Actions → Manage family sharing.
Uncheck the sibling and click Save.
Click Actions → Edit billing schedule and lower the Autopay Amount($).
Lower the amount in Actions → Auto-renewal settings too.
If the sibling has no other active membership, their status changes to Inactive and they can't check in.
A pause applies to everyone on the membership. To pause just one sibling, remove them and lower the price, then add them back when they return.
Don't use Remove from family in the Family members window for this. It separates the member from the family group, needs a new email address for them, and deletes their membership, even an individual one.
When the main member leaves
Family sharing can only be changed from the membership of the student who holds it, and that student can't be removed from it. Create a new membership for a sibling who's staying:
On the staying sibling's profile, click Add Membership → New and set it up with the right price. Set the first autopay date to the family's usual billing day.
Check the new membership, then cancel the old one with Actions → Cancel membership.
Add the new membership first, so the family isn't left without one.
When to use separate memberships
Give each sibling their own membership when they're on different plans, pay on different days, or pay with different cards. Each membership is charged separately with its own payment method. You can still give a sibling rate by setting a lower price on that membership.
FAQ
Can each child get a separate receipt?
Not on a family membership. It has one combined charge and one invoice. If a family needs separate receipts, use separate memberships.
Is there an automatic sibling discount?
No. Set the price on each membership, or one combined price on a family membership.
Why isn't the sibling listed in Manage family sharing?
They aren't linked to the family yet, or you opened the membership from another family member's profile. Link them first, then open the membership from the profile of the student who holds it.
