Tags and groups help you organize your members. This guide shows how to create them, add members, and use them across NextKick.
Tags vs. groups
Tags are labels. Use them to mark where a lead came from or what someone is interested in, such as "Google Search", "Walk-In" or "Summer Camp". A member can have many tags.
Groups are teams of members, such as "Competition Team", "Demo Team" or "Instructor Team". Use them to limit who can join a class or event, and to message a whole team.
Step 1: Create a tag
Go to Accounts → Tags.
Click Create New Tag.
Enter the Tag name and an optional Description.
Click Create.
Always create tags on this page first. You can't create a new tag from a member's profile or the Add tags box.
The list shows each tag's description and how many members have it (Assigned). Use the pencil icon to edit a tag, or the trash icon to delete it.
Note: Deleting a tag removes it from every member who has it.
Tip: Create one tag for each lead source, such as "Website Inquiry", "Referral" and "Social Media Ads". You can then see which marketing brings in the most students.
Step 2: Add tags to members
One member
Open the member's profile.
Under Basic Details, click the icon next to Tag.
Choose the tags and click Save.
Many members at once
Go to Accounts → Profiles.
Check the box next to each member.
Click Actions → Add tags (or Remove tags).
Choose the tags and click Save.
Automatically from a form
When you create a sign-up form, turn on Add Tags to Participants. Everyone who signs up through that form gets the tag. See How to Create a Sign-up Form.
Step 3: Create a group
Go to Accounts → Groups.
Click Create.
Enter the Group Name and an optional Description.
Under Group Members, click + Add. Filter by Rank, Tag or Name, check the members, and click Add.
Click Save.
Click Export on the Groups page to download your groups.
Step 4: Add a member to a group from their profile
Open the member's profile.
Under Basic Details, click the icon next to Group.
Select the groups this member belongs to and click Save.
Clearing a group here removes the member from that group.
Step 5: Use tags and groups
Tag and Group appear as filters on many pages across NextKick. Some of the most useful:
Find members: in Accounts → Profiles, filter by Tag.
Send messages: when you choose recipients, filter by Group or Tag. See How to Send Emails, Push Notifications, and Text Messages.
Bulk actions: in Attendance → Bulk Actions, filter by Tag to check in or promote a set of students.
Classes: use Join Conditions to limit a class to one or more groups. See How to Set Up Your Class Schedule.
Events: limit an event to a group, for example a Competition Team tournament. Group-only events don't appear on the kiosk.
Learning Center: use the Group filter to work with one team.
Community posts: show a post only to members of a group or with a tag.
Workflows: start a workflow when a tag is added to a member, or add and remove tags as a workflow step.
Common questions
Can a member be in more than one group?
Yes. Select every group they belong to in Manage Groups.
Does deleting a tag remove it from members?
Yes. The tag is removed from everyone who had it.
Can I create a new tag from a member's profile?
No. Create it in Accounts → Tags first, then add it to the member.
Should I use a tag or a group?
Use a tag to describe a member, like a lead source or an interest. Use a group for a team you want to manage together, like a demo team.
How do I tag everyone who signed up for summer camp?
Turn on Add Tags to Participants on the camp's sign-up form. For people who already signed up, select them in Accounts → Profiles and use Actions → Add tags.
